In the lecture “Giovanni Boccaccio: The poet who turned into a storyteller” Margherita Calderoni will describe how Boccaccio displeased his father for not becoming a merchant but he acquired monumental status in the history of literature. After 700 years from his birth his Decameron is as crisp as a screen play as his life was as colourful as a Renaissance tapestry from the Black of the Florentine plague to the Red of his passionate loves to the Grey of his monkish frock.

He was a scholar and a poet but he inaugurated a form of prose which in the novel has superseded epic poetry. Decameron is the triumph of the narrative which anticipated the future, determined the course of Renaissance fiction, thanks to his skills, experiences and great humanity, inspiring also foreign literature such as, for example, Chaucer.
